Breeders Cup
Breeders Cup Meeting, Lone Star Park, TEX
*****************************************
Courtesey of BET365
As usual there is much to look forward to at this year’s Breeders Cup meeting, although from a Europeans prospective it is disappointing not to see more of our runners make the journey. At least we look to have an outstanding chance in the Filly & Mare Turf race with Ouija Board, whose participation was guaranteed once the threat of racing taking place on soft ground receded. Ouija Board has one key statistic in her favour in that horses beaten in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe have won six Breeders Cup races – and though the Arc was under four weeks ago, her trainer Ed Dunlop is confident she is over that race. With the going described as ‘perfect English good ground’, and a good draw, she must have a great chance of ending her season in the best possible way.
bet365 Filly & Mares Turf prices … Ouija Board 7/4, Light Jig 7/2, Yesterday 7/1, Wonder Again 8/1, Megahertz, Riskaverse 10/1, others on bet365 website.
There is no European challenger in the Classic, but that does not detract from what looks to be a quality field. Pleasantly Perfect returns to defend his title but could face a stiff challenge from the likes of Ghostzapper, who earned a Beyer speed figure of 128 when winning at Monmouth in August – the best since the figures were first published in 1992. Ghostzapper can get a nice lead from Azeri for a mile before kicking clear and holding the late thrust of the favourite. Sweet Catomine will be all the rage for the Juvenile Fillies after her impressive win in the Del Mar – one of the most impressive middle-moves you’ll ever witness! The Europeans are well represented in the Mile, where Whipper looks to be our best chance, but connections of the fast improving three-year-old Artie Schiller could be rewarded for their decision to take on older horses. This one looked awesome in the last furlong of the Jamaica Handicap at Belmont last time out, and has tasted defeat only once in his last six starts – to Kitten’s Joy! If the latter brings the form of his last race at Belmont to Lone Star Park, then the Turf race is all over! Here at bet365 we can help you avoid the betting window queues with ante post odds on all eight races, and live betting on the day, so just sit back and enjoy!

Racing: Lone Star turf magical for Ouija Board

Under the cover of darkness, the entire British challenge for Breeders' Cup XXI emerged on to the track here at Lone Star Park yesterday. Both of them.
It is the smallest contingent from these islands in the history of the thoroughbred world championships, but it is not an entry without hope. Jeremy Noseda's Wilko has a chance in an unusually undersubscribed Juvenile by dint of the fact there are just eight runners, but Ouija Board is the big shot and the numbers which count for her are the form figures preceding her name."Full Story: "

BBC SPORT | Other Sport | Horse Racing | Six more arrests in fixing probe: "Police have confirmed six more people have been arrested as part of a probe into the alleged fixing of horse races.
The two women and four men are among 22 people now on bail until April 2005 on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud.
In September, champion jockey Kieren Fallon was one of 16 people arrested, including two other jockeys and a racehorse trainer, in dawn raids.
Officers, who are checking over 1,000 items, including several computers and 59 phones, expect to make more arrests.
Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Wilmott, leading the operation for the City of London Police, said: 'We have made a large number of arrests, and we expect to carry out more over the next few months.
'This has grown into a huge investigation and will require more time and resources to fully investigate. For this reason we have taken the decision to extend their bail to early next year.'
Police confirmed that one woman was arrested in Shrewsbury, another in Sheffield, one man in Doncaster, two men in North Yorkshire and another man in Bristol. None of the six arrested are thought to be jockeys or trainers.
Allegations of fixing involving more than 80 races over the last two years are being examined.
The inquiry began with more than 130 officers raiding 19 addresses across Suffolk, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Hertfordshire. "

The Australians claim exchanges are a threat to the integrity of the sport. Exchanges would also, of course, diminish the amount bet through the state-owned betting system.
'The inference that British racing is rife with corruption is a suggestion I utterly repudiate,' Nichols said. 'Betting exchanges present opportunities and threats to horseracing, but it is outrageous to impugn British racing's integrity to advance a particular agenda.' "Full Story:

Racing: Ouija Board the Texas trailblazer

It seems, from the British and Irish perspective at least, that the venue for this year's Breeders' Cup is most appropriate. Lone Star Park in Texas is where racing's Olympics will be held on Saturday week and Ouija Board stands as the sole luminary from these parts travelling to Grand Prairie.
It appears a cowboy mentality has set in. Lone Star Park is the smallest site in 21 runnings of the Breeders' Cup and the reason for its appearance on the roster is unclear. It could indeed be that the event executive are keen to spread their favours around North America, but then it could also be a state desire to get hold of the championships, because what Texans want they usually tend to get."Full Story:

Poker - Playable Hands Part 2
As stated in the previous article, the following are suggested guidelines for an average 9 handed $2/$4 Limit Hold 'em table, where it is neither an aggressive or very tight line up. Slight adjustments would have to be made if the game became too tight, and likewise if the game became a little wild.
Pocket Pairs were discussed in the previous article.
The following is advice for 'suited' starting hands, i.e. both cards are of the same suit:
* AK - Play and raise at every opportunity in any position, only put the brakes on against tight opponents
* AQ - Play and raise in any position. Don't re-raise
* AJ, A10, KQ - Play in any position. Raise in late position. Raise in the blinds heads up
* A9, A8, A7, KJ - Call in un-raised pots. Preferably in mid or late position. Only raise in the blinds heads up against weak opponents
* A5, A4, A3, A2, K10, K9, QJ, Q10, J10 - Only call in late position in un-raised pots. Pass in raised pots or in bad position. Only raise in the blinds heads up against weak opponents
* K8, K7, K6, K5, K4, K3, K2, Q9, Q8, J9, J8, T9, T8, T7, 98, 97 87, 86, 76, 75, 65, 64, 54 - Only call in late position in un-raised pots. Pass in raised pots or in bad position.

Newmarket Champions Day Saturday 16th
The highlight of Saturday’s Champions Day card is undoubtedly the re-match between Azamour and Doyen in the Group One Champion Stakes. The race gives Doyen the chance to redeem himself after flopping in the Irish Champion Stakes behind Azamour last time out. That run was too bad to be true, and it is worth remembering that he had looked a truly top-class performer after his impressive victory in the King George back in July. His trainer Saeed Bin Surror has his team in brilliant shape (four wins on Monday), while the horse has since been putting in some sparkling displays on the home gallops. Jockey Frankie Dettori has chosen him in front of stablemate Refuse To Bend (who has the form to match the best of these), and the hint should be taken.

bet365 Champion Stakes prices … Azamour 11/4, Doyen 7/2, Lucky Story 5/1, Mister Monet 11/2, Refuse To Bend, Haafhd 10/1, others on bet365 website.

The big betting race on the card is the Tote Cesarewitch, a 36-runner handicap over 2 ¼ miles – shouldn’t be too difficult to solve then! Their has been a considerable ante-post gamble on the Irish runner – Orpington – but that looks set to go astray as he is now a doubtful runner. Jumpers have an excellent record in the race, with six of the last eight winners having had decent hurdle form, and the most likely candidate from that sphere appears to be Mr Ed. The six-year-old has been a revelation this year, winning five races (four hurdles, one flat), and giving the impression that he will relish this marathon trip. He could well go off favourite on the day, but at a bigger price a chance is taken with It’s The Limit trained by Amanda Perrett, whose father Guy Harwood had an excellent with staying horses, winning this race ten years ago with Captains Guest. It’s The Limit has been slow to mature (only 9 races in his life), but has always given the impression that he was a high-class stayer in the making (finished well over two miles last time out), and looks set to improve again over this trip.

bet365 Cesarewitch prices … Orpington 7/1, Escayola, Mr Ed 8/1, No Refuge 9/1, Tungsten Strike, Distant Prospect, Tempsford, It’s The Limit 12/1, others on bet365 website.

Playable Poker Hands
A bit off theme I know but I do enjoy these Poker tips from Bet 365

In an earlier article I suggested the sort of hands that you should, or should not be playing. In the next couple of articles I will deal with starting hands more specifically. As with all aspects of poker there really aren't any specific rules, so the following is only a suggested guide. It is also more relevant to Limit Hold'em, where playing the correct cards will grind out a winning strategy most of the time, if your discipline can outlast the 'luck rollercoaster'. In No Limit Hold'em it could be argued that you can play any cards if the position, state of the game, and depth of chips is great enough. Even in NLH though, it is probably best not to waiver too far from the following... unless your name is Gus Hansen or David Ulliot.
I'll split the hand types into three: pocket pairs, suited cards and unsuited cards. The following suggestions are probably most suited to an average 9 handed $2/$4 table, where it is neither an aggressive, or very tight line up. Slight adjustments would have to be made if the game became too tight, and likewise if the game became a little wild.
Pocket Pairs and Limit Hold em.
* Aces, Kings, Queens - Play, raise and re-raise at every opportunity in any position, any amount of players. Don't 4-bet Queens against very tight opponents
* Jacks, Tens, Nines - Play and raise in any position. Only re-raise in late position against 1 opponent. If there are three or four opponents after the flop, you will need to be holding an overpair or a set.
* Eights, Sevens - Play in un-raised pots. Only raise in heads up situations such as the blinds. Heads up, you are likely to win with just the pair of eights. Against two opponents or more, you need help on the flop.
* Sixes, Fives - Pass in early position to a raise. Pass in early position if there is likely to be a raise behind you. Call in late position, preferably against several opponents where you are getting a good return should you flop a set. Only raise in the blinds heads up against weak opponents.
* Fours, Threes and Twos - Pass in early position. Only play in pots where there are at least three opponents (e.g.two limpers and a big blind). Always try and avoid playing these hands unless you are last to act after the flop.

Coral Sprint Trophy
Sa Oct 9 – 15.40 BST
Mutawaqed must have a great chance of improving on his third in last year’s race, particularly now he has been dropped 2lb since finishing fourth in the Ayr Gold Cup last time out. The ground at Ayr was on the soft side and connections believe the forecast faster conditions at York will be much more to his liking. Mutawaqed has already shown a definite liking for the course after two particularly good efforts from three runs at York, including last year’s third and a win in a valuable handicap over this trip of six furlongs back in July. With ticks in all of the right boxes – track, trip, ground, and handicap mark – he must take all the beating providing he gets the run of the race. In this respect he will benefit from the strong handling of jockey Eddie Ahern, who should know the horse well having won on him before. Should he not make the cut for the race (needs only three horses to drop out), then Smart Hostess would be the second choice. With only four runs this season she will be fresher than most, and looked to be coming to hand when third over this trip at Ripon a fortnight ago.

POST FLOP PROBABILITIES PART 2
It seems the whole world is into poker at the moment, I have played a few times online for very small stakes but haven't really made the time to play in anger, which I guess is the best way to learn. Anyhow I just came across this educational article courtesey of the 365 casino people that I will read later. I'll try and track down part 1.

Post Flop Probabilities Part 2

The following table refers to the number of outs, and the probability of one of these outs appearing. If you have an open ended straight draw, you have 8 outs.
You hold 10,J on a three-suited flop of 2,8,9. You know that you can win the pot with the four 7s or the four Qs. In Omaha, you may hold 7,10,J,Q so have 16 outs to give you the nuts : four 6s, three 7s, three 10s, three Js and three Qs. You are a favourite ! Should there be two hearts on the flop, and you have 10,J of hearts in your hand, then you can also add the A,K,3,4 and 5 of hearts, making 21 outs. The danger here though, is that an opponent may have a nut flush draw, which changes the hand from being a favourite, to an underdog. So be careful when counting outs. Don't get carried away. Many of them may not be sure winners. Paying for a draw in poker, that turns out to be a losing draw, is possibly the biggest crime you can commit. Don’t do it.
The table shows the percentage chances of improvement after the flop has been dealt in a Hold 'em game. The first column shows the chances of improving with the next 'turn' card. The second column shows the chances of improving in the final two cards. Column 3 indicates the chances of improvement after 4 communal cards have been dealt, and only the final 'river' card is to come. There are slight differences between the first and last columns because the number of unknown cards in the pack is one less (you can see four on the flop as opposed to three). In Hold 'em should you have a flush draw, you have 9 winners from 47 cards in the pack after the flop. You have 9 winners out of 46 after the 'turn' card.
Improve Improve Improve
Outs On Turn In 2 Cards On River
1 2.1% 4.3% 2.2%
2 4.2% 8.4% 4.3%
3 6.4% 12.5% 6.5%
4 8.5% 16.5% 8.7%
5 10.7% 20.3% 10.9%
6 12.8% 24.1% 13.0%
7 14.9% 27.8% 15.2%
8 17.0% 31.5% 17.4%
9 19.1% 35.0% 19.6%
10 21.2% 38.4% 21.7%
11 23.4% 41.7% 24.0%
12 25.6% 45.0% 26.1%
13 27.7% 48.1% 28.3%
14 29.8% 51.2% 30.4%
15 31.9% 54.1% 32.6%
16 34.0% 57.0% 34.8%
17 36.2% 59.8% 37.0%
18 38.3% 62.4% 39.1%
19 40.4% 65.0% 41.3%
20 42.6% 67.5% 43.5%
I would suggest that it may be worth printing this odds sheet and sticking it on your computer desk next to your screen.
Note that these are Hold 'em percentages. When playing Omaha the odds are different because you have 4 cards in your hand. The number of unknowns after the flop is no longer 47 cards, but 45. In Omaha, it is also much easier to put opponents on exact hands. For example some opponents will only ever raise with top set. Therefore, you know two more cards, and can discount them from the 45 unknowns. So now your flush draw is 9 out of 43, but not all 9 are winners.
Finally, just to re-iterate the above warning. These are odds on 'improvement'. They are not necessarily odds on winning the pot. Should your opponent have 'a set' (three of a kind) on the flop when you are chasing your flush draw, you are in bad shape. At least 1 of your flush draw cards also gives your opponent a full house. So you don't actually have 9 'winners'. Secondly, once you have hit your flush on the turn, your opponent will have 10 cards to improve (a 21.7% chance) of making a bigger hand on the river. So in reality, your flush draw will not win 35% of the time, and not even 25% of the time, in this case!
