« Missed the snow? Get it on eBay | Main | Beckham's BMW auctioned on ebay » January 05, 2005EBay offerings never cease to amazeEBay offerings never cease to shock The meaning of life: 78 cents. Britney Spears’ chewed gum: $500. A 10-year-old, partially eaten cheese sandwich with a Virgin Mary image: $28,000. The shock that anyone bought this weird stuff: Priceless. There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s eBay. Advertisement ‘They’re the best kids on earth,’’ the father told Newsday. ‘‘But everybody falls off the wagon from time to time and needs to fall back into alignment.’’ EBay lists more than 20,000 items under ‘‘weird stuff,’’ with subcategories ‘‘slightly unusual,’’ ‘‘really weird,’’ and ‘‘totally bizarre.’’ Most of that is quite tame, and the quirky stuff is just a fraction of the millions of items eBay sells. But occasionally, people list truly peculiar items. Earlier that month, someone bought the meaning of life for less than a dollar — plus $2.40 for shipping. The seller claimed a fisherman passed on the meaning of life. ‘‘I’m not expecting a huge amount for my notes,’’ the listing read. Entrepreneurs often try to capitalize on news. After Hurricane Frances, various sellers hawked hurricane wind, debris — sand for $6.99 a pound — and an autographed roof shingle, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Some eBay members try to copycat or sell variations of unusual items that make news. After a woman auctioned her father’s ghost and cane, someone sold a tinfoil ‘‘ghost protection’’ hat with a hand-drawn ghost and cane on the front. • EBay lists more than 20,000 items under ‘‘weird stuff,’’ with subcategories ‘‘slightly unusual,’’ ‘‘really weird,’’ and ‘‘totally bizarre.’’ Some of them include: The meaning of life: 78 cents. Britney Spears’ chewed gum: $500. A 10-year-old, partially eaten cheese sandwich with a Virgin Mary image: $28,000. The woman selling the cheese sandwich claimed it contributed to a $70,000 win at a casino. An online casino bought it for $28,000. Philadelphia Forward, a tax-reform group, posted the city’s tax code, calling it outdated. No one bid. ‘‘We couldn’t give it away,’’ said Brett Mandel, executive director of the organization. Last month, Nautico Ventures LLC offered three expedition packages for a five-week search for Amelia Earhart’s plane. The starting bid on a platinum package was set at $250,000, including air fare, a stateroom on the research vessel, a five-night stay at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a lei greeting and reading material. Winning bidders would have helped the crew. Posted by darrenmpower at January 5, 2005 09:51 AM |
