Underground firm buys parts off eBay

Telegraph | News | Underground firm buys parts off eBay

A rail company is buying spare parts for the London Underground on the auction website eBay.

Tube Lines, the infrastructure consortium that maintains the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines, has purchased computer cards, components for station train indicators and other equipment - some of it 20 years old - which the rest of the rail industry regards as obsolete.

The company, which includes the troubled engineering services firm Jarvis, said it had resorted to the internet for spares to keep equipment operating until it could be replaced with more sophisticated versions.

An official said: "There are some very aged computer systems on the Underground. Where possible, we have asked manufacturers to clone components from scratch. In other cases, we have been happy to use eBay.''
