« | Main | Dirt cheap Dell servers start appearing on Ebay » December 10, 2004Sparkling Ebay top of the treeFT.com / Business / US - Sparkling Ebay top of the tree It is not too late to buy that cuddly, saxophone-playing Santa you have always craved. On Ebay's UK website, starting bids for the 20-inch soft toy are invited at 14.99 ($29), compared with a claimed retail price of 34.99. A sale at the lower price would drop another 1 or so in commission into the coffers of what has become the internet's most powerful money-making machine. The latest chapter of Ebay's rise is as dramatic as anything before. The value of goods sold on its 22 auction sites around the world could top $10bn for the first time this quarter. Soaring international sales, led by Germany and the UK, are on the brink of edging past those of the US. What makes the Ebay story more remarkable is that it comes at a time when many other e-commerce companies are experiencing heavier weather during what is their strongest sales period of the year. In the US, where trends in e-commerce are still about two years ahead of the rest of the world, consumers have become smarter about hunting out the best deals online, forcing e-tailers to cut their prices. And with more competitors vying for business and growth rates slowing, higher marketing costs are contributing to the pressure on profit margins.
